Thinking about joining
Fortis Green Lodge?

We meet at Freemasons' Hall, London WC2B, four times a year. Open to men of good character, any background or profession.

Freemasonry is an open organisation. Our membership, our meeting venue at Freemasons' Hall, and our charitable giving are all publicly known. A lodge is a group of men who meet regularly, share a formal dinner, and give back to their community.

What membership looks like

Four evenings a year.
A great deal more than that.

Fortis Green Lodge meets four times a year at Freemasons' Hall, London WC2B. Meetings start at 4pm and are followed by a sit-down Festive Board dinner.

Regular meetings with structure

Each meeting follows Taylor's Ritual, focused, purposeful, and unlike anything else in your week. Many members find it a genuinely grounding experience.

🍷

Formal dinners in a remarkable building

Every meeting ends with a Festive Board dinner at Freemasons' Hall. The same faces, the same humour, year after year. A rare fixed point in a busy city.

A wide circle in London

Lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects, tradespeople. Fortis Green Lodge reflects the city it meets in. Members are connected across professional networks you would not otherwise encounter.

Charitable giving that goes somewhere real

Each year the lodge raises funds for local and national causes. You see where the money goes. Members care about that.

The process

How joining works

There is no single path into Freemasonry. Some members are proposed by a friend already in the lodge. Others enquire directly. Both routes are equally valid.

01

Make an enquiry

Fill in the form below or send us a message. We will respond within a few days. No pressure, no obligation, no awkwardness.

02

Meet the Membership Officer

An informal conversation, in person or by phone, to answer your questions and give you a proper picture of lodge life. This is not an interview.

03

Come to a Festive Board as a guest

The best way to understand Freemasonry is to sit at the table. No regalia required. Come along, meet the members, see if it feels right.

04

Be proposed and initiated

If both sides are ready, a member proposes you to the lodge. The lodge votes. If accepted, your Initiation, the First Degree, follows at the next meeting.

What members say

In their own words

I nearly didn't come because I thought I wouldn't fit in. There's no type here. Professionals, tradespeople, people from every corner of London. Just good men who get on well.
James, member since 2015
I expected ceremony and stiffness. The ritual is there, but what surprised me was how good-humoured everyone is. The Festive Board dinners are genuinely fun.
Thomas, member since 2020
I didn't know what to expect. But from the first evening, everyone was welcoming. I've been coming ever since.
David, member since 2018

Common questions

Things people ask before joining

Do I need to know a Freemason to join?+

No introduction is required. You can enquire directly using the form on this page. Several current members joined without knowing anyone already in the lodge. The Membership Officer will arrange a conversation and, if things feel right, invite you to a Festive Board as a guest.

Do I need to hold a particular religious belief?+

Freemasonry requires a belief in a Supreme Being, but does not specify which faith or tradition. There is no Masonic theology. Men of all faiths, and many backgrounds, have found a home in the lodge.

How much does it cost?+

There is an annual subscription covering lodge running costs and national membership, plus a one-off joining fee. The Festive Board dinner is paid on the night. There are no hidden costs and no financial pressure. Contact us for a clear picture of the numbers.

How much time does it take?+

Four meetings a year, each a Thursday afternoon and evening at Freemasons' Hall. Lodge of Instruction is available for those learning the ritual but is optional. Beyond that, what you put in is your choice.

I work in the City, will I fit in?+

Fortis Green Lodge has a significant number of members from professional backgrounds in law, finance, medicine, and technology. It is a Metropolitan Grand Lodge lodge, meeting at Freemasons' Hall in Holborn, a short walk from the City and the Inns of Court. You will not be unusual here.
